“As conservatives, we believe the government should not exercise a power it can’t reliably and transparently carry out. Even before Christa Pike’s botched execution attempt, Tennessee faced serious questions and concerns about its lethal injection protocol — including another botched execution attempt earlier this year. Because we value limited government, accountability, and responsible stewardship of taxpayer dollars, these failures should raise serious questions.
“We should demand transparency around executions, accountability when the process fails, and confidence that the state can exercise its most extreme power accurately and responsibly. Yet the evidence points to both a repeated refusal and an inability by the government to meet these basic standards. When the government fails to carry out an execution without secrecy, uncertainty, or the risk of a botched execution, conservatives should question whether it should have that power at all.” – Demetrius Minor, Executive Director
