In a pair of new op-eds, Republican lawmakers in Kansas and Ohio have outlined their reasons for supporting legislation to end the death penalty in their respective states.

Sunflower State Senator Carolyn McGinn, writing in the Kansas City Star with public defender Kelson Bohnet, calls on “Kansans to do an honest assessment of what capital punishment has and hasn’t brought to our state.” Doing so reveals a broken public policy that fails victims’ families, does not improve public safety, and risks innocent lives.

Echoing those concerns in the Columbus Dispatch, Ohio Senator Michele Reynolds also shares how her “strong faith and personal experience” shape her concerns about the death penalty.

Senators McGinn and Reynolds are part of the growing chorus of conservative lawmakers across the country who have taken leading roles in efforts to repeal the death penalty.
